RNLI in Skegness: Lifeboats, Lifeguards & Water Safety

Skegness RNLI Lifeboat and Lifeguards

The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) plays a crucial role in keeping Skegness safe for locals and visitors alike. From heroic lifeboat rescues to vigilant beach lifeguards, the RNLI is at the heart of the town’s seaside safety. Whether you’re planning a day on the sand or exploring the waters, it’s worth knowing how these services help protect everyone.

Remember: If you're at the beach and you need help, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

The Skegness RNLI Lifeboat Station

The Skegness lifeboat station has a long history of saving lives at sea. Staffed by brave volunteers, the lifeboat crews are ready 24/7 to respond to emergencies in the North Sea. The station runs both all-weather lifeboats and inshore lifeboats, handling everything from small boating accidents to larger maritime incidents.

Skegness RNLI Beach Lifeguards

During the summer months, trained lifeguards patrol the beaches to ensure safety for swimmers and families. They monitor the water, provide first aid when needed, and educate beachgoers on how to stay safe in the surf. The lifeguard unit is positioned overlooking the busiest areas of the beach, offering extra peace of mind for visitors.

Lifeguards are on duty between May and September (check their website for up to date dates) between 10am and 6pm. They advise you swim between the red and yellow flags, which signifies the safest part of the beach to swim, and the area they actively patrol.

You can follow their great work and keep up to date on recent rescue stories, as well as follow their safety information and updates on their Facebook page.

Water & Beach Safety Tips

Do you know your flags?

Even with expert lifeguards and lifeboat crews on hand, it’s important to take precautions:

  • Swim between the flags: Always stay in the safe, supervised zones.

  • Watch the tides: Be aware of changing tides and rip currents. Skegness has a vast tidal range which can catch you off-guard.

  • Supervise children: Keep an eye on young swimmers at all times. Speak to the lifeguards and ask for a Sandi Starfish wristband. Write your contact details on the wristband and if your child gets lost, they can go to the lifeguard unit, who will be able to call you and reunite you both.

  • Know the emergency signals: Familiarize yourself with flags, sirens, and safety notices.

  • Report dangers: If you spot someone in trouble or a hazard, alert a lifeguard immediately or call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Never enter the water yourself.
