Depleted Skegness Town Beaten 3-1 Away at Gresley Rovers

Skegness Town suffered a frustrating afternoon on the road as the Lilywhites were beaten 3-1 by Gresley Rovers in the United Counties League Premier Division North.
Town travelled to The Moat on Saturday, September 12 with a depleted squad, missing several players and later losing two more through injury during the match.
Despite the difficult circumstances, Skegness remained competitive for long periods before late goals eventually secured all three points for the hosts.
Gresley take an early lead
The opening stages were relatively even, with both sides looking capable of creating opportunities.
However, Gresley broke the deadlock after 15 minutes through Ryan King.
The goal came shortly after a decision which left Skegness frustrated. Declan Johnson had been flagged offside when Town felt he was in a promising attacking position, before Gresley restarted play and quickly moved upfield.
King finished the resulting attack to give the home side a 1-0 advantage.
Skegness responded positively and remained in the contest, before the balance of the match appeared to swing in their favour shortly before half-time.
Gresley's Albert Lansdowne was shown a straight red card in the 42nd minute following a challenge on Jordan Nuttell, leaving the hosts to play the remainder of the game with ten men.
However, Town's hopes of capitalising were complicated by injuries.
Captain Conor Marshall and Matt Ward were both forced off, with Toby Cotton and Theo Kitt-Bushell introduced as replacements.
The enforced changes left Skegness short of recognised defensive options going into the second half.
Ten-man Gresley double their advantage
Despite being a player down, Gresley extended their lead shortly after the restart.
Substitute Macauley Holmes made an immediate impact after coming onto the pitch, heading home from a free-kick to make it 2-0 in the 56th minute.
Skegness continued to enjoy spells of possession and pushed forward looking for a route back into the game.
Town's reshuffled defence, however, left them vulnerable when Gresley regained possession and looked to attack quickly.
The match also became increasingly stop-start, with a large number of cards shown by referee Samuel Matthews. Eight Skegness players were booked across the afternoon, while both teams eventually finished the game with ten men.
Toby Cotton scores first Skegness Town goal
The Lilywhites finally found a breakthrough with five minutes of normal time remaining.
Toby Cotton's effort found its way past the Gresley goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1 and give Skegness hope of rescuing something from the match.
It was Cotton's first goal for Skegness Town.
But any hopes of a late comeback lasted only two minutes.
Gresley responded in the 87th minute when Sam Grouse finished a counter-attack to restore the hosts' two-goal advantage and make it 3-1.
There was still time for another dismissal deep into stoppage time as Skegness defender Bailey Forth received a second yellow card.
The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 defeat for the Lilywhites.
Skegness Town turn attention to Leicester Nirvana
The result leaves Skegness Town with three wins, two draws and three defeats from their opening eight Premier Division North matches, putting them on 11 points.
Town will now look to bounce back when they return to the MKM Stadium to face Leicester Nirvana on Saturday, September 19.
