New multi-use sports court approved for Mablethorpe’s Sherwood Fields

A new multi-use sports facility has been given the go-ahead at Sherwood Fields in Mablethorpe.

East Lindsey District Council's planning committee considered plans for a new Football Foundation PlayZone at the Sherwood Road site on Wednesday, September 2.

The approved development will provide a hard-surfaced multi-use games area designed for activities including football, basketball and netball.

Plans include fencing around the court, seating for spectators and LED lighting to allow the facility to be used during the evening.

The proposed opening hours are 9am until 9pm, seven days a week, with an online system expected to be used to manage bookings.

Planning documents identify Sis Pitches as the applicant for the scheme.

The project forms part of wider investment in community facilities in Mablethorpe.

East Lindsey District Council previously confirmed that the Mablethorpe Area Partnership and Football Foundation had received support from the council's East Lindsey Investment Fund for a new PlayZone at Sherwood Fields. The project was one of a number of schemes backed through a programme aimed at improving community facilities and public spaces across the district.

The planning application went before councillors with an officer recommendation for approval. The council's official agenda identifies the development as application 00489/26/FUL at Sherwood Fields, Sherwood Road, Mablethorpe.

Reporting following the meeting confirmed that councillors approved the scheme.

The new facility is intended to increase access to affordable outdoor sport in an area where opportunities for young people and families have been identified as particularly important.

Ofsted's current area profile for Mablethorpe shows that 64% of children are living in low-income families, placing the area among the most deprived 10% nationally on that measure.

Once completed, the PlayZone will add another year-round sporting facility for residents in Mablethorpe and the surrounding Lincolnshire coast communities.

A construction timetable and opening date have not yet been publicly confirmed.
